Council budget 2019/20

Dumfries and Galloway Council is facing huge financial pressures. The grant from the Scottish Government is not enough to pay for all the services that your council currently provides. We anticipate that we will have to make savings of approximately £30 million over the next two years.

Your feedback on the budget proposals

Thank you to everyone who took part in our Budget Challenge. We received a great response.

Using our budget simulator, we asked you how you would set the council's budget to achieve £30 million of savings over the next two years. Your feedback showed the service areas where you made the biggest and smallest savings. We also asked for your feedback on potential ways your council could generate income and areas that you thought we should invest in. Community conversations were held across the region in some cases led by Community Councils and engagement also took place with customers, staff and partners. Your views are helping to inform how your Council sets its budget on the 28 February 2019 for next year.

Summary of budget challenge feedback

3,605 of you started the budget simulator challenge and 710 of you submitted a completed budget
The area you took most savings from was Office Accommodation and Public Buildings - £1.5million (37% of the available budget)
The area you took least savings from was Health and Social Care for Adults - £5.7million (7% of the available budget)
A need for increased recycling opportunities was a consistent theme from all stakeholders
There is an increased awareness of the need for savings to be made; achieving £30m of savings is a difficult task was a consistent theme from stakeholders
Understanding that the Council needs to deliver services different in the future; mainly provide more services online and enable communities to influence and deliver more locally

Impact assessments

An impact assessment is a tool that helps us to check whether our policies and practices are fair and inclusive. We assess whether the decisions we make are likely to impact on different groups of people across the region. The process aims to improve services for all of the people in Dumfries and Galloway.

Each budget proposal that is put forward from our political groups will undergo an impact assessment.
