Reviewing a benefit decision

If you're unhappy with the decision made about a housing benefit or council tax reduction application you can ask for a review.

Send us an enquiry about your claim

We will contact you within 7 days to explain more fully how we calculated your claim.

Request a review

If you're still unhappy after receiving an explanation from us then you can ask us to review the decision. Contact us within one month of receiving the decision letter.

You'll need to provide:

  • the date and reference number from your decision letter
  • the reason you disagree with our decision
  • any extra information or documents you think will help
  • your signature

A different officer will look at your application again and let you know their decision within 14 days.

Housing benefit appeal (with or without council tax reduction)

You can appeal if you're unhappy with our review decision. You must do this in writing and clearly state the reason(s) for your appeal, including any supporting documentary evidence. If the decision is not changed then your appeal will be forwarded to the Appeals Service who will contact you directly.

Independent Council tax reduction appeal

You can ask in writing for an independent review from the Local Taxation Chamber if you've applied for council tax reduction without housing benefit and are unhappy after having it reconsidered by us or you have asked us to review our decision, 2 months have passed and we have not advised you of the outcome of your review request. You must do this within 42 days of the decision.
