English as an Additional Language (EAL) in schools

The English as an Additional Language (EAL) Service provides advice, consultation, and training to school staff, as well as direct teaching to children and young people who are multilingual.

EAL teachers work with staff in schools to ensure:

  • Identification and assessment of need
  • Appropriate level of support
  • Effective teaching strategies and resources
  • Teaching support to individuals or small groups of pupils
  • Inclusion and equality of access to the curriculum
  • Recognition of need as linguistic rather than cognitive
  • Recognition of the importance of the pupil's first language and acknowledgement of their linguistic skills and experience
  • Entitlement to equitable provision across the region
  • Promotion of multilingualism
  • Effective home/ school liaison

Questions about your child or young person

You should discuss any concerns about your child's progress or well-being at school with the class teacher or head teacher in your primary school or the pupil support teacher in your secondary school.
