Following an extensive recruitment process, Dumfries and Galloway Council has appointed Dawn Roberts as its new Chief Executive.

This year, The Queen's Award for Voluntary Service (QAVS) is running a special additional award to commemorate the Platinum Jubilee. We want to celebrate fantastic work by national charities and their volunteers to empower young people and provide them with skills and opportunities.

Our Council already knew the great achievements of our Facilities Team, but we are very proud to announce that the team was recognised on the national stage by winning the highly acclaimed award of "Outstanding Contribution to Cleaning" at the ASSIST Conference last night. This is a fantastic achievement as this category is open to all the 32 Scottish Local Authorities.

Dumfries and Galloway Council recognises that Social Enterprises are changing the world for the better. Like traditional businesses they aim to make a profit, but it's what they do with their profits that sets them apart - reinvesting or donating to create positive social change.

Following the announcements yesterday from P&O Ferries on its UK-wide operations and the dismissal of over 800 of its staff including, we understand, some based at the Cairnryan-to-Larne crossing in our region, Dumfries and Galloway Council strongly condemns the insensitive action of P&O Ferries and the manner in which it has treated its workers.

Wednesday 28 April is International Workers' Memorial Day. Dumfries and Galloway Council's senior politicians marked the day by expressing their condolences to friends and families who have lost loved ones as a result of losing their lives in the line of duty. In a joint statement, Council Leader Elaine Murray and Depute Leader, Rob Davidson said:

Dumfries and Galloway Council is launching a Property Improvement Grant Scheme for proprietors and occupants of commercial properties in Annan town centre and other neighbourhood centres in the DG12 post code area.

Parts of Dumfries town centre will fall under temporary 20mph speed limit from Friday 12 March. Dumfries and Galloway Council are responding to public feedback by putting in place a temporary 20mph speed limit in Dumfries town centre through working with Sustrans and their spaces for people project.
