Neil Armstrong commemorated in Langholm
Monday, 17 June 2013 15:07
Langholm’s first and only Freeman, Astronaut Neil Armstrong has been commemorated in the town with a series of space and science events which culminated at the weekend.
Visitors from across the UK joined local people on Friday evening in Langholm Parish Church to pay tribute to the man who made that giant leap for mankind. During a sometimes moving Church service Langholm Pipe Band and Town Band played Highland Cathedral, Community Councillor Grace Brown reminisced about Neil’s visit to the town and Hayden Goodfellow, an Astrophysics Student at Glasgow University, explained his inspiration.
With funding from the Scottish Government’s Talking Science Fund, over 200 local primary school children went through a mobile planetarium experience and pupils from Langholm and Annan Academies along with members of the public attended a talk from Professor Martin Hendry and Dr Stuart Clark.
For the last two weeks, an exhibition titled ‘From the Moon to the Muckletoon’ attracted a large number of local people and visitors to the Gallery in the Town Hall. Many shops along the High Street brought the town to life with colourful displays.
The working group set up to organise the commemorative activities is hoping that an annual or biannual science event can be organised by the community as a legacy of this project.
