Successful Nithsdale school sports week
Thursday, 13 June 2013 14:43
Over 1000 school children in Nithsdale have been treated to a week of sporting events by students from Dumfries and Galloway College. The students, supported by Dumfries and Galloway Council’s Leisure and Sport Department, organised a week of events for different ages and abilities to celebrate and promote the sporting opportunities on offer in the area.
The week started off with a day of sports and activities for P1-3 children. Over 450 children attended across the day and took part in fun tasters of football, athletics, dance and other activities. The rest of the week then continued with events for Secondary girls, Disability Sports, P4-5 classes and P6-7 classes with lots on offer to the groups.
The events were also supported throughout the week by University of the West of Scotland students who promoted positive health and physical activity messages to all involved.
Chairman of Nithsdale Area Committee, Councillor Gillian Dykes, said, “It is good to see so many young people taking part in sport and enjoying themselves. In a golden era for sport and with Glasgow 2014 approaching, it is great to see children being offered these opportunities and promoting healthy lifestyles.”
Dumfries and Galloway College Lecturer, Kevin Somerville, added, “Our students have been working hard for months to organise and deliver these events for local school children and deserve the praise for their efforts. What they have delivered this week will be remembered by the schools for years to come.”
