Irene Gall : Beyond the Sea: Colour and Inspiration
This exciting new exhibition from Thornhill artist Irene Gall is all about colour; colour which changes with the light and with the seasons, changing from indoors to out, from the Mediterranean to Scotland.
‘Beyond the Sea’ refers to the colour ultramarine which came from beyond the sea to so enhance the palette of artists from the Early Renaissance onwards – a colour which is used a lot by the artist. But other colours are represented too, wonderful autumn colours, lovely reds and yellows, muted colours, pale colours.
For the paintings Irene has charted the inspiration that led to a finished painting – a book, a plant, another painting. Her work has been strongly influenced by two schools, the Post-Impressionists, especially Cezanne; and the Italian Futurists, especially Boccioni.
The scope of the work exhibited is large, both geographically – from the local area to the islands of Greece and the Canaries, and in range – from bull running to onion domes, barley fields in summer to frozen winter marshes. There is something for everyone in this exhibition; most of the work is being shown for the first time.
The exhibition is in the main gallery of the Tolbooth Art Centre, High St, Kirkcudbright until the23rd June 2013. The Tolbooth is open Monday to Saturday 11am to 5pm and Sunday 2 to 5pm.
