Langholm celebrates First Man on Moon

David Stevenson, Freeman of Dumfries and Galloway, opened an exhibition in Langholm Town Hall on Sunday 2 June 2013, commemorating the life of astronaut and Freeman of Langholm Neil Armstrong.

 

‘From the Moon to the Muckle Toon’ showcases Neil Armstrong’s career as an astronaut and captures his historic visit to the town in 1972.  It brings together photographs, documents and newspaper articles, and video footage from his visit to the town.  It also offers children the opportunity to dress up in a space suit and be photographed.

 

Open Monday to Saturday for the next two weeks, the exhibition is part of a series of events organised in the town to commemorate Neil Armstrong’s life.

 

Professor Martin Hendry of Glasgow University will debunk the moon hoax conspiracy theories in the Buccleuch Centre on Thursday 13 June at 1.30pm. .

 

Local primary school children will experience a tour of the night sky on Friday 14 Jun, when a mobile planetarium is installed in Langholm Academy.

 

A commemorative church service will take place in Langholm Parish Church on Friday 14 June at 6.30pm.

 

Dr Stuart Clark, a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society, will explain what the astronauts left behind on the moon and why in the Buccleuch Centre on Saturday 15 June at 2pm.  This will be followed at 4pm by a free showing of the film Apollo 13. 

 

Later that evening, at Langholm Rugby Club, Dumfries Astronomy Group will guide people round the summer night sky and give advice on how to use binoculars and telescopes at Langholm Rugby Club, from 9.30pm.
