Council joins National Taskforce to address coal industry challenge
Tuesday, 28 May 2013 10:45
Dumfries and Galloway Council reaffirmed its commitment to supporting local people last week by joining a national taskforce in Cumnock last week. Scottish Government Minister for Energy, Enterprise and Tourism, Fergus Ewing MSP chaired a meeting of the Scottish Government Taskforce, set up after the collapse of Scottish Coal, to address the challenges which face the industry, its workers and their communities.

Key speakers gave their updates on the current situation. Council Director Alex Haswell, commented: “The collapse of Scottish Coal will have a real impact on the people in our region. It is important that we are part of this new Scottish Government Taskforce to discuss the challenges that local people will now be facing. The tone of the meeting was positive in that all the organisations concerned are united in the aim of working together to get things moving from assessment of the situation to taking real action which can save jobs where we can and help the affected communities. We made considerable progress in tackling training and employability issues and discussing how best to achieve the restoration of sites. However, we cannot underestimate the scale of the problems presented by the demise of Scottish Coal.
