New Emotional Abuse Leaflet Launched
Wednesday, 22 May 2013 13:37
The Domestic Abuse and Violence Against Women Partnership (DAVAWP) has launched a new leaflet that focuses on Emotional Abuse.
The new leaflet was developed by the Domestic Abuse Team after receiving feedback from a group of Domestic Abuse survivors supported by Dumfriesshire and Stewartry Women’s Aid. The survivors told the team that they would have sought help sooner if they had realised that they were suffering this type of abuse and asked them to develop public information about emotional abuse.
The new resource provides examples of verbal abuse and a description of emotional abuse and other coercive behaviour, which can also be part of the wider picture of abuse. The leaflet also includes the helpline numbers of several organisations that can provide help and support for women and men living with abuse, including information for anonymous ‘third-party’ reporting like CrimeStoppers.
Hazel Borland, NHS D&G Director of Nursing and DAVAWP Chair, said: “Emotional Abuse has a devastating impact on people, which is not always recognised. We hope that this new leaflet will provide information and raise awareness of this type of abuse throughout Dumfries and Galloway. We also hope that as a result, victims will feel more confident in seeking help and support sooner. I would like to thank the Survivors Group for their feedback and help in the production of this leaflet.”
DAVAWP is responsible for the development of the local strategy to tackle domestic abuse and other forms of violence that mainly affect women and children throughout the region.
