Funding boost to celebrate Neil Armstrong
Wednesday, 22 May 2013 10:59
£5000 of funding from the Scottish Government’s Taking Science Fund has been awarded to Langholm to celebrate astronaut Neil Armstrong’s life through a series of space and astronomy focussed events for young people and adults.

Announced on Wednesday 22nd May 2013, this funding will bring well known astronomy speakers to the town as well as practical space and astronomy events for children and adults.

In celebrating Neil Armstrong, Langholm’s only Freeman, in this way the community hopes to inspire people from all walks of life and honour what his family said following his death; ‘While we mourn the loss of a very good man, we also celebrate his remarkable life and hope that it serves as an example to young people around the world to work hard to make their dreams come true, to be willing to explore and push the limits, and to selflessly serve a cause greater than themselves. For those who may ask what they can do to honor Neil, we have a simple request. Honor his example of service, accomplishment and modesty, and the next time you walk outside on a clear night and see the moon smiling down at you, think of Neil Armstrong and give him a wink.’

‘Did we Really Land on the Moon?’, a fascinating public talk debunking the moon hoax theories by Professor Martin Hendry takes place in the Buccleuch Centre on 13th June at 1.30pm.

On the 14th June pupils from Langholm and Canonbie Primary Schools will take part in a mobile planetarium experience by Glasgow University Astronomy and Astrophysics department.

Then on Saturday 15th June, Dr Stuart Clark a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society explains what the astronauts left behind and why in the Buccleuch Centre at 2pm. This is going to be followed at 4pm by a free showing of Apollo 13 and then that evening Dumfries Astronomy Group is going to guide people round the Summer night sky and give advice on how to use binoculars and telescopes at Langholm Rugby Club from 9.30pm.

In addition to this, ‘From the Moon to the Muckle Toon, an exhibition in Langholm Town Hall Gallery opens on 3rd June and runs until Sunday 16th June. This free exhibition showcases Neil Armstrong’s life and also his visit to the town in 1972.
