Langholm Celebrates Neil Armstrong’s Life

Langholm is preparing to celebrate Neil Armstrong’s life through a series of special events in early June.
Langholm, an Armstrong stronghold, claimed astronaut Neil Armstrong as one of its own and made him a Freeman in 1972 following his moon walk three years earlier.
‘From the Moon to the Muckle Toon’, an exhibition showcasing Neil Armstrong’s moon landing and visit to Langholm opens on 3rd June 2013 in Langholm Town Hall Gallery and runs until 15th June 2013.
A series of science-related events are also being organised in the town during this fortnight with a space and astronomy focus for young people and adults.
Professor Martin Hendry of Glasgow University is going to debunk the moon hoax conspiracy theories in a lecture for secondary school pupils and the public on 13th June in the Buccleuch Centre. On Friday 14th June Glasgow University Astronomy and Astrophysics department is going to showcase the night sky for local primary school children in a mobile planetarium. That evening there will be a commemorative service in Langholm Parish Church starting at 6.30pm.
On Saturday 15th June Dr Stuart Clark, a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society explains what the astronauts left behind on the moon and why, in a fascinating public lecture at the Buccleuch Centre starting at 2pm. At 4pm Apollo 13 will be shown for free in the Buccleuch Centre and then at 9.30pm you can join members of Dumfries Astronomy Group at Langholm Rugby Club for a tour of the summer night sky.
