River Nith Harbour Authority: volunteers wanted
The River Nith Harbour Authority is seeking volunteer members.
The new harbour authority will be responsible for laying moorings, navigation markers, controlling vessels on the river and estuary, and charging mooring and landing fees.
The new body replaces the Nith Navigation Commission, which ceased to operate in the 1960s, resulting in the harbour areas at Kingholm Quay, Glencaple, and Carsethorn having no active harbour authority.
The area covered includes the existing facilities at Glencaple and Kingholm, the former harbour area of Carsethorn, and stretches as far as Southerness.
There are 6 vacancies for volunteer trustees. Applicants are expected to be able to demonstrate appropriate experience, such as harbour management, the fishing industry, financial management, administration, marketing, or fundraising. The closing date for applications is Friday 14 June 2013.
There will be an information event on Thursday 23 May 2013, from 2pm to 7pm, in the Barbour Hall, Glencaple.
Councillor Alastair Witts, chairman of the River Nith Harbour Authority Steering Group, said, “For anyone with the appropriate skills, this is an exciting opportunity to lead on developing the River Nith for commercial and leisure purposes. I invite anyone with the appropriate skills and interest to attend the information event.
Anyone not able to attend the event can get more information from Ian Cooper, Dumfries and Galloway Council, t; 030 33 33 3000.
