Wednesday, 15 May 2013 09:24
The Annandale and Eskdale Annual Sports Awards Ceremony was held at the Corner House Hotel, Annan on Friday 10 May. The event was organised by Dumfries and Galloway Council's Leisure and Sport Team. Eight awards were presented to local sports people who had excelled in their chosen sport during the year 2012 with another two Special Awards presented.

The Small School Sports Initiative of the Year Award was sponsored by the host venue The Corner House Hotel from Annan. St Columba’s and Springfield Primary Schools shared the runners up prize. Hightae Primary School came first for their health and well being initiative covering everyone in the school community.

The Large School Sports Initiative of the Year Award was sponsored by The Dumfries and Galloway Standard with Eastriggs Primary School being announced winners for their new approach to and progress in developing sport and physical activity in the school. Newington Primary School were runners up for their outstanding commitment and success across a number of sports.

The Star Hotel and Restaurant from Moffat again sponsored the Volunteer of the Year Award which recognises the work of people who give up a lot of their spare time to sport. Runner up was Andrea Manson for her work with Annandale and Eskdale Disability Sport Swimming Team. The winner was a unanimous decision and went to Richard Andrew from Annan for his volunteering across a number of local authority, school, community and club sporting activities and events during 2012.

The Young Sports Personality of the Year Award was again sponsored by Grange Quarry Ltd. and proved to be the hardest decision for the judges. After some deliberation, 8 year old gymnast, Kirsten Mcfarlane and 13 year old Glasgow Celtic Footballer Ellis Dagliesh were joint runners up.  14 year old Matt Argo from Lockerbie who was named Scottish Junior Tetrathlon Champion among other successes was named the winner of the Young Sports Personality Award.

In the team of the year award, sponsored by Kian’s buses, an impressive eight nominations were received. Runners up were Annan and District Athletics Club for their consistent success throughout the athletics season with Moffat S1 Boys and Girls Volleyball Teams named winners after both teams winning the Scottish Schools Volleyball Cup.

Sponsored by The Cumberland Building Society, the Service to Local Sport Award was won by Neil Stevenson from Langholm for his 50 years unrelenting support to Langholm Golf and Rugby Clubs. Runner up was Sally Hunter who was celebrating her 50th year of service to St Mungo Bowling and Tennis Club.

The Coach of the Year Award, sponsored by Magnox Limited, was presented to Maureen Smith from Annan for her enthusiasm and dedication to teaching dance to young children. In addition, Maureen would take children the length of the UK to compete and nine times out of ten would return with awards. Runner up was the volleyball team of the year winners coach, Brian Orr from Moffat.

Two other awards were made on the evening. Energy Solutions were recognised with an award for their sponsorship of the Annandale and Eskdale Sports Academy and the Annan School Cluster Active Games Team were presented with a special achievement award recognising their feat of winning 11 of the 24 gold medals at the prestigious Active Games Final last September.

The final and main category of the evening was the Sports Personality of the Year Award sponsored by Anderson’s Joinery. The decision as usual was hard with nominees competing at the top of their game. After some considerable deliberation, young Lockerbie Curler Hannah Fleming was named runner up after being part of the team that won the Scottish and World Ladies Junior titles. Young disabled swimmer Sam Pattinson was named Sports Personality of the Year after a year that saw him being part of the British team that travelled to Italy for the 6th Down syndrome world championships where he won gold and silver medals and broke four personal best times.

The evening also included a very informative presentation by lead manager from sportscotland, Beth McLeod, on the new Positive Coaching Scotland initiative.  Beth also made a presentation to Annandale and Eskdale Disability Sport with a cheque to the value of £820 raised from the proceeds of the evening’s raffle.

Chairman for Annandale and Eskdale Area Committee, Councillor Denis Male said of the event, “The awards were a superb event and an excellent opportunity to celebrate the enormous effort and talents of the sporting stars of Annandale and Eskdale. The quality of nominations was excellent and I know that our judging panel had a really difficult task in choosing this year’s deserving winners.

"I would like to praise the quality of the nominations in this year’s young sports person category who I am sure will go on to achieve great things in their chosen sport. I wish all the athletes well in their future endeavours."
