Social Work staff graduate as National Dementia Champions
Tuesday, 07 May 2013 14:10
Four members of staff from Dumfries and Galloway Council's Social Work Services and a staff member from Stewartry Care recently studied on the National Dementia Champions course. The graduation ceremony was held on 2nd May at Murrayfield Stadium, Edinburgh with the opening address being made by Alex Neil, cabinet secretary for Health and Wellbeing.
36 social work services staff graduated on the day from across Scotland along with numerous NHS staff.
The course and qualification is linked to Promoting Excellence, a learning framework for social services and healthcare staff who work with people diagnosed with dementia and their carers/families. The joint initiative is managed by The Scottish Government, SSSC, Alzheimer Scotland and NHS Education for Scotland. Our dementia champions will have a leadership role with the aim of improving the experiences, care, treatment and outcomes for people with dementia.
Chair of Social Work Services Committee, Councillor Andy Ferguson, said, "Congratulations to Frances Thielen, Veronica Johnston, Elaine Sellors and Jenny Seed from Social Work Services and also to Carylann Williamson from Stewartry Care. This is a very timely course given the age profile of our region. I am impressed at the commitment of our staff and staff from local care organisations who willingly gave up some of their own time to learn how to provide the best possible care for those facing dementia."
