Rugby girls bound for Scotstoun
Wednesday, 01 May 2013 10:27
Following on from the success of the Active Schools Nithsdale Primary Schools Rugby Festival, 12 girls from Cargenbridge Primary will be heading to Scotstoun, Glasgow to play for the Dumfries and Galloway U12 girls team. The organisers are Dumfries Lionesses and Dumfries Saints Rugby Club.
After their victory at the Primary Competition in March, the girls jumped at the chance to compete at the International Rugby 7s event in Glasgow on Sunday 5 May. This opportunity forms part of a new rugby development within Primary Schools in Dumfries and Galloway. The programme will include a step-by-step guide on how to tackle safely which forms a natural progression from tag-rugby into contact rugby. This is the first time that this programme has been piloted in Dumfries and Galloway, however, it has been hugely successful in other regions in Scotland with many more pupils progressing into contact rugby at club level.
The girls, who will be accompanied on the day by Dhariat Gibson, Dumfries Girls Rugby co-ordinator, will get free entry to the games, event entertainment, skills zones, and a chance to meet the International players. If any local girls (P5+) are interested in playing weekly girls-only rugby, the can contact Dhariat on dumfrieslionessesrugbyclub@aol.co.uk
