Councillors visit Lockerbie Youth Centre
Wednesday, 01 May 2013 09:13
Local councillors got a taste for the activities experienced by young people at Lockerbie Youth Centre this week.

The Centre members can study for the Duke of Edinburgh's awards, take part in a variety of workshops and take interesting courses, building their confidence and, best of all, enjoying time with friends.

They have been flexing their creative muscles at OUR LYC HUB(Our Lockerbie Youth Centre Hub) over the Easter break.

Dumfries and Galloway Council held 2 days of graffiti art workshops at Lockerbie Youth Centre, helping the young members create three works of art. Over 14 young people attended each day and each young person was given the opportunity to create an individual piece of graffiti art on canvas.

To create the second art piece young people were asked what they felt when they walked into Lockerbie Youth Centre. Their responses included welcome, respect, included and feeling safe. Each of the two groups then created a large graffiti canvas embodying these words and feelings. The highlight of the workshops was working as a team to develop and create the Graffitti Art Wall. The young people attending viewed Lockerbie Youth Centre as their HUB and this was reflected in the art work as OUR LYC HUB (Our Lockerbie Youth Centre Hub).

Councillors Peter Diggle, Graham Tait and Stephen Thompson got to meet the young people and view the artwork.  Then they were challenged to build a Tranjia. This apparatus is used to cook and make tea when the Duke of Edinburgh's award participants are on their treks.  Imagine assembling this half way up a mountain!

Here are some of the comments by the young people who took part:
• I never liked Graffiti art before I tried it at Lockerbie Youth Centre.
• Art is interesting
• It is the best thing we have ever done at Lockerbie Youth Centre
• We worked as a team
• It was really fun
• We should do this again
• Gives us something to do
• Good to do something during the holidays
• It made me like art more and think about drawing again
• I learned a new skill

The workshops were facilitated by our Council’s Community Learning and Development Service including Margaret Cameron, Rhona MacGregor, Simon McCrea and Lynda Lunney.
