Galloping Forward with Support from the CX Project
Monday, 29 April 2013 11:43
Sent on behalf of CX Project

With help from the CX Project, the young and ambitious team at James Ewart Racing Ltd are determined to bring more top racing results back to Annandale & Eskdale. Based near Langholm and run by husband & wife team Briony & James Ewart; James Ewart Racing is rising to become one of the premier National Hunt Racehorse Stables in Scotland. Both James & Briony are passionate about racing and ensuring the best possible care for horses training; employing an excellent team and providing ever improving facilities. Although seen by some as an elitist sport, nothing could be further from the truth at James Ewart Racing; here active participation at all levels is encouraged, from participation in the pony club to joining horse ownership syndicates. By simply phoning in advance, visitor are welcomed to the stables with open arms.

In order to further expand the business and become more accessible, the Ewart’s dreamt of a larger horse box that would enable them to take more horses to races. Whilst working with Briony and James; Chris Churms, Economic Development officer at the Economic Development Office on the South of Scotland Business Competitiveness Programme (SOSBCP) identified that the CX Project grant would be appropriate. Chris worked closely throughout the grant application process, firstly ensuring that the grant criteria were met and then liaising closely with them to complete application documentation.

With grant assistance from the CX Project, the dream became a reality; the new vehicle emblazoned with the company livery arrived late last year and has helped the Ewarts race forward with their plans. As soon as the vehicle arrived, a new full time job was created; local girl Emma Jones was appointed head girl for away racing, ensuring that the best of care is provided whilst “on the road”. The spin-off effect of a higher profile has also meant that an additional 3 horses have been placed in training with the potential for more as the profile grows, creating yet further employment in the area

Briony said: “We really were delighted to receive the grant towards the Horsebox - the offset of which has been very good for our business. We have now taken on another full time member of staff and other part time drivers and it has provided our racehorses and owners with first class transportation to and from the racecourse. It is exceptional in terms of design and comfort and means that we can travel all over the UK widening our opportunities as an expanding business. We cannot thank the teams at SOSBCP and the CX Project enough.”

If like James Ewart Racing, you have business growth plans or are considering starting up a business in Annandale & Eskdale, or are an intermediary (accountant, bank manager, business adviser etc) working on behalf of a client; the CX Project team would be delighted to hear from you.

John Grierson, Chapelcross Site Director said ‘The Beyond CX Grant Scheme is available to new and existing businesses in Annandale & Eskdale to ensure we can maintain a healthy business community once Chapelcross has been decommissioned. As is demonstrated by the award to James Ewart Racing a small grant to invest wisely can have positive major effect on the business performance’

Chair of the Council's Planning, Housing and Environment Committee, Councillor Ian Carruthers said
'There are many businesses in Annandale and Eskdale that are looking to expand despite the economy. James Ewart Racing Ltd is a good example of the sort of company that can benefit from this scheme, as they have ambition to grow and have created local jobs.'

Bev Bamford, business advisor at the CX Project said
“Don Taylor, GLA Project Officer and I have been meeting with a number of intermediaries and organisations to highlight what help and support can be offered to their business clients who have expansion plans and are keen to hear from more”.

The basic grant criteria are to demonstrate actual or predicted profitability and the potential to create jobs in Annandale & Eskdale.
