Councillor Andy Ferguson, Chair of Social Work Services Committee, opened the new residential childcare centre, 38 Hardthorn Road, Dumfries, today, 3 December. He said, “Our Residential Childcare Strategy was designed in 2008 to provide the best of care for our young people within our region. There will always be the need for residential care for some young people at certain difficult times of their lives. As corporate parents we have to make sure that where they live is as much like a family home as possible whilst being safe and suitable for delivering our services. “These are our young people and the best environment for them is close to home. They need continuity in their education and support from family and friends. We also have to make sure that our Children’s Services are efficient and cost-effective and we can do that best when they are here in Dumfries and Galloway.” Vice Chair of Social Work Services Committee, Councillor Ted Thompson, said, “The design, planning, building and quality assurance processes can be somewhat lengthy but it is essential for our young people that we get things right. Now that the works are complete this new centre will be home for four young people and I am sure the location and the facilities will meet all their needs. “
