Chick This Out – Free Activities for 12 to 18 Year Olds
Friday, 31 March 2023 14:18

Young People in Wigtownshire are in for a treat this Easter as the Council’s Youth Work Service launches their holiday programme, packed with new and egg-citing activities for 12 – 18 year olds.

The Easter fun kicks off on Saturday 1 April at Douglas Park, where the Youth Work Service is teaming up with Newton Stewart Initiative to deliver a Family Fun Day in the afternoon, followed by Football, Rounders, BBQ and Music for teenagers from 5.30pm onwards.

Throughout the two weeks, there’s a range of activities on offer including traditional Youth Work Drop-ins at Stranraer, Newton Stewart, Wigtown and Whithorn, and Football, Dance Classes, Golf, and Craft Sessions.  Also, Primary Seven’s are invited along to take part in Social Transition Sessions at the Douglas Ewart High School and Stranraer Academy with Laser Quest, Inflatable Assault Courses and Team Building Games.

There is a call out for Young Volunteers to join forces with the Youth Council help out at a Spring Clean at 11.00am on Monday 3 April at Agnew Park in Stranraer as part of the Spring Clean Scotland Campaign.  Free lunch and refreshments will be provided.

‘The Arts Award’, running in Stranraer and Newton Stewart over three days, in partnership with Stranraer Community Events Group, will see young people explore and investigate different art forms, including drumming, music, artists, drama, fashion and dance, and at the end of the programme be presented with a Discover Level Arts Award.

Councillor Ian Blake, Chair of Dumfries and Galloway Council’s Communities Committee said: “It’s great to see a wide range of free activities on offer during the school holidays, providing young people with opportunities to take a break from their studies, spend time with their peers and have fun!”

Vice-Chair of Communities Committee , Councillor Jackie McCamon, added: “Youth work plays a key role in supporting all young people to be successful and confident individuals, in and out of school, evenings, weekends and during the school holidays, and I would encourage young people to get involved in the activities on offer this Easter, and beyond”.
