World Cancer Day: Move More
Friday, 28 February 2020 11:22
World Cancer Day raises awareness and aims to end the injustice of preventable suffering from cancer.

This year's theme "I am and I will" showed that everyone has the capacity to act in the face of cancer.

Dumfries and Galloway Council is working in partnership with Macmillan Cancer Support to deliver the Move More programme across the region. The individually-tailored programme of physical activity support is designed to help people with cancer to become active, or stay active, at a level that's right for them.

On World Cancer Day, the Council’s Move More champions were out and out and about at Tesco stores in Annan and Dumfries to raise awareness and signpost people affected by cancer into a free programme of activity in their local community.

Councillor Andy Ferguson, chair of the Communities committee, joined Move More champion Steve Head and Tesco Community champion Anne Croucher in Dumfries to promote the Move More programme.

Councillor Ferguson said: “It's great to see the Move More champions promoting World Cancer Day.  The Move More programme will help people affected by cancer to live healthier and more independent lives. By offering physical activity opportunities we're contributing to people's improved health and wellbeing.”

Councillor John Martin, vice chair, said: "Protecting our most vulnerable people and being inclusive are priorities for our Council. It's great that we can deliver Move More to encourage people with cancer to stay active."
