Improving outcomes for care-experienced young people
Thursday, 09 January 2020 13:37
The Council’s Education and Learning committee [15 January 2020] will consider a report outlining the work of the Council’s Care Experienced Education Team.

The committee will be asked to:
• Note the development of the Care Experienced Education Team from Scottish Attainment Challenge funding;
• Note the key challenges and the approaches taken to address these; and
• Agree to receive a further report in summer 2020, outlining progress and the positive impact of the project and plans to sustain improvements.

In summer 2018, the Scottish Government announced that it would allocate Scottish Attainment Challenge funding to each local authority, equivalent to £1,200 a year for each looked-after young person, guaranteed for 3 years.

Councillor Jeff Leaver, chair of the Education and Learning committee, said: “Our aim is to build capacity in the system to support children and young people. But, we know that it will take time to embed this. So, we’ve employed additional teachers, trained in key interventions, to target looked-after and care-experienced young people who are currently underperforming in school.

Councillor Ros Surtees, vice chair, said: “The Scottish Attainment Challenge Fund is a targeted initiative focused on closing the attainment gap between the most and least disadvantaged children. This innovative initiative will improve the literacy, numeracy and health and wellbeing of young people adversely impacted by deprivation.”
