Active Communities Christmas Ceilidh
Monday, 23 December 2019 11:43

Dumfries and Galloway Council have been working in partnership with volunteers from Lochside Community Centre to deliver our first.

The event saw 35 people from four ‘Active Communities’ groups coming together to celebrate the end of their activity blocks with a Ceilidh dance, provided by Dumfries and Galloway Council’s Active Communities coach Jayne Riddet, and a Christmas lunch provided by Karen Wylie, Janet Brown and volunteers from Lochside Community Centre.

The four Council-run groups, who have been meeting weekly through the year included; Scottish Dancing for All, Bridging Plus, Let’s Motivate and Stroll in the Park.  All groups provide low level activity for people who are living with or recovering from a long-term condition or who wish to remain active.

The participants who attended described how important such groups have been for them in terms of building strength, combating social isolation, improving balance and co-ordination and keeping the brain active.  Due to the success of this event the organisers will look to make this an annual event.

Chair of Communities Committee, Councillor Andy Ferguson said;

“It is great to see so many people attend this event at Lochside Community Centre.  The provision of such programmes will help people affected by long-term conditions live healthier and more independent lives.”

Vice Chair, Councillor John Martin said;

“This is an example of great partnership working in our local communities.  By continuing to promote physical activity, whatever the level, we are contributing to the improved health and wellbeing of the people we serve.”
