Dumfries and Galloway Council’s Communities Committee is due to meet on Tuesday 5 November and will receive a report on what’s being done to improve the regions roads, bridges and infrastructure.
Members will be asked to note the progress updates of the Infrastructure Asset Class Capital Programme for 2019/20 and agree to the acceptance of funding for projects in Port William and Dumfries.
The European Maritime and Fisheries Fund has offered funding of just over £16.5k for lock up facilities at Port William Harbour. Members will be asked to accept this funding on behalf of the Council. It will allow for fishing equipment and supplies to be securely stored at Port William Harbour, which will be of great benefit to those working in and around the harbour, and the community as a whole.
Sustrans have offered funding of £36,000 to improve the road and traffic signal design at the Troqueer Road junction in Dumfries. The new design, which has been part of community consultation, will include controlled pedestrian provision and work will begin during the 2020/21 finance year.
The report also highlights the work that has been done to redress, resurface and improve carriageways on multiple roads across the region, from primary routes like the A709 to new ‘U’ class roads. As well as this, Councillors will receive updates on plans to place a complete 20 miles per hour zone in Cargenbridge, a new speed limit for the area around Moniave Primary School and details on how the streetlighting spend to save project is only 2% off completion.
Communities Committee Chairman, Councillor Andy Ferguson welcomed the report, highlighting the harbour at Port William as a particular positive. He said;
“This report contains a lot of data that, broken down, shows that our Council is continuing to invest in our road network and infrastructure as best we can. I am really pleased with the Fisheries Fund offer of money to provide lock up facilities in Port William harbour. This will make a real difference to those who work the harbour and I hope my fellow members agree with the report recommendations.”
Vice Chairman, Councillor John Martin said of the report;
“Our Council wants to keep our residents safe. The spend to save streetlighting programme and the works that have been carried out on our road network are prime examples of us doing this. One of the main complaints our Council receives in potholes, and whilst I accept our roads are not all of perfect condition, this report details our reasoning and remedy for carrying out the works.”
