Dumfries and Galloway Council’s Communities Committee will meet on Tuesday 5 November and will hear about the impact our Council’s Youth Work Service had on young people in the region in 2018/19.
The report, produced for the past 2 years, highlights the key work that the Youth Work Service carries out in relation to the five priority areas, which are;
-
Community Based Youth Work Opportunities
-
Youth Work in Schools
-
Youth Participation and Youth Democracy
-
Wider Achievement including The Duke of Edinburgh Award
-
Support to Third Sector Youth Work
Councillors will be asked to agree to the Quality and Standards Report as well as being asked to agree to receive a presentation by the young people themselves, who regularly use the service and who wish to highlight the good work it does to Elected Members.
The report details that nearly 2,000 young people are participating in youth democracy, and that over 11,000 young people reported an increase in their confidence levels after being involved in some capacity with the service. Just over 24,000 attended Youth Work events, with 439 volunteers supporting the work the team do.
Chair of Communities Committee, Councillor Andy Ferguson said ahead of the meeting on 5 November;
“This report is quality in every sense of the word. Youth Work within our region is one of our Council’s biggest successes, and the statistics contained within this report show that up very well. What is particularly pleasing is that there is region-wide success stories contained in this report, so young people from Wigtown to Langholm are able to access services and receive wonderful opportunities to attend events and volunteer.”
Vice Chair, Councillor John Martin commented;
“This report is very timely, given that next week is Youth Work Week. The service has led on some major successes for this Council in the last few months, namely Youth Beatz, the school uniform drop in and the holiday hunger programme during the October school break. The Service deserve all the recognition this report gives the team and I look forward to my fellow Councillors endorsing the report.”
