Town Centre Capital Fund
Thursday, 05 September 2019 11:49

At the first meeting of the newly formed Economy and Resources (E&R) Committee (12 Sept), Members of Dumfries and Galloway Council will be asked to consider proposed capital projects from the Town Centre Capital Fund.

Dumfries and Galloway Council’s allocation from the Scottish Government Town Centre Fund amounts to £1.529 million for 2019-20. The fund is designed to ‘enable local authorities to stimulate and support place based economic investments which will encourage town centres to diversify and flourish, creating footfall through local improvements and partnerships. Specifically, this fund will contribute to transformative investments which drive local economic activities and re-purpose town centres to become more diverse, successful and sustainable.’

The fund can be used to invest in a wide range of initiatives which include town centre living and supporting town centres to be vibrant, accessible and enterprising places. This could include re-purposing building and housing, retail, business and social and community enterprise, leisure and tourism.

The Council will be responsible for the funding decisions, but the grant must be spent in the 2019-20 year.

Chair of E&R Committee, Rob Davidson said: ”This funding is welcomed and will enable us to develop a number of projects across the whole of the region to give the local economy a much needed boost.”

Vice Chair, Archie Dryburgh said: “It’s a priority that our to town centres are revitalised and we will do whatever we can to boost local businesses and provide affordable town centre accommodation for those who need it.”
