Youth Orchestra Logo Design Hits Right Note
Monday, 08 July 2019 15:26
On Saturday 29 June, Dame Barbara Kelly announced the winning Logo Design for the Dumfries & Galloway Youth Orchestra Logo Competition. The prize giving ceremony was held at Kirkcudbright Galleries, and was accompanied by a performance in the Galleries from two violinists, who are members of the Youth Orchestra.

Dumfries and Galloway Youth Orchestra (DGYO) is a new orchestra for young musicians living, working or in education in the region. Established in November 2018, DGYO provides them with a wonderful opportunity to play in an orchestra with other students from across the region and to receive first class tuition and direction from experienced teachers and professionals. The orchestra’s Musical Director is Jane Hainey, a professional violinist and for many years a member of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra.

The Trustees decided that it was appropriate for the orchestra to have a logo, a distinctive design, recognisable to players and supporters and which would help to create a distinct identity. They therefore launched a competition, available to all school pupils in Dumfries and Galloway, to find a winning design. Almost 300 designs were submitted from schools across the Region. These were narrowed down by the players in the orchestra voting to decide the final 5 which they considered to be the best.

As Curator of Kirkcudbright Galleries, Anne Ramsbottom was asked to be on the judging panel, beside Dame Barbara Kelly who judged the 5 finalists. The winner received a prize of £50 which was kindly donated by the Rotary Club of Dumfries Devorgilla. The runners up received a certificate for their efforts. The winning logo will now go on to be featured on the DGYO’s website, social media, merchandise and banners.

Kirkcudbright Galleries, over the weekend of the 29 and 30 June, projected the 299 entries which were submitted by young people up in the Mezzanine level of the Galleries, for members of the public and families of the artists to see. This provided the opportunity for young creatives to see their own artwork displayed in a Gallery and to be rewarded for their efforts in a professional setting. The performance by the violinists was thoroughly enjoyed and the music echoed throughout the Galleries.

Commenting on the event, Councillor Andy Ferguson, Chair of the Dumfries and Galloway Council's Communities Committee said;

“Kirkcudbright Galleries hopes to support emerging young artists as much as possible, whether this be, creatives, musicians or performers, the Dumfries & Galloway Youth Orchestra Logo Competition demonstrates that we have many talented young people from across the region and it is good experience for them to be challenged to design a logo, but also to be given the opportunity to see their own work displayed in an Art Gallery.”

Councillor John Martin, Vice Chairman of Dumfries and Galloway Council's Communities Committee has expressed that;

“The Dumfries & Galloway Youth Orchestra Logo Competition was a great success, with nearly 300 regionwide entries. Working with DGYO has helped to strengthen connections between music, culture and the arts in Dumfries & Galloway. We are pleased that the Galleries continues to be used as a venue for a multitude of different events that can bring the region together.”

Maria Taylor, one of the Trustees of DGYO who has helped organise the competition said;

“I am proud to be involved with the exciting new Dumfries and Galloway Youth Orchestra. The young players have achieved such a lot, under the leadership of their musical director Jane Hainey, in the short time since the start in November 2018.”
