Roadshow strengthens support for veterans in D&G
Tuesday, 23 April 2013 14:12
A Veterans’ Roadshow was held in Dumfries today, organised by Veterans Scotland and Dumfries and Galloway Council, with support from DG First Contact.
The aim of the Roadshow was to strengthen and integrate support networks for former members of the armed forces in Dumfries and Galloway.
Topics discussed included challenge and change – not all veterans are the same; the comradeship community – a unique aspect of military service; the 10 main issues for veterans in Scotland; vulnerable veteran – how you can help; and housing veterans in Dumfries and Galloway.
Those making presentations included Councillor Brian Collins, Veterans Champion for Dumfries and Galloway Council; Neil Morrison, Veterans’ Roadshow project manager; Kevin Gray, Chief Executive of Royal British Legion Scotland; Phil Cox, Veterans Scotland; Gary Gray, Poppy Scotland; Jayne Moore, Dumfries and Galloway Housing Partnership; and Councillor Archie Dryburgh, Dumfries and Galloway First Contact Group. Participants also heard from Jim Halliday, a former serviceman, who left the army only 5 weeks ago and has now been allocated a house by DGHP, greatly assisting his transition to civilian life.
Organisations participating in the event included Police Scotland, NHS Dumfries and Galloway, Jobcentre Plus, First Base Agency, and South West Scotland RnR, Welfare Rights, and Citizens Advice..
Councillor Brian Collins, Veterans Champion for Dumfries and Galloway Council, said, “Our Council is in the vanguard of support for our armed forces, being one of the first in Scotland to sign an Armed Forces Community Covenant. And it’s obvious from this seminar that we’re working in partnership with as many organisations as possible to improve the lives of current and former service personnel to help them with issues such as housing, schooling, and the return to civilian life. It’s vital that our veterans realise that they don’t have to cope on their own. There is help available and this event has helped us to identify further practical ways that can assist them.”
