The stage is set for the International Ice Hockey Federation’s World Championship ice hockey tournament in Dumfries, Scotland.
For the second time in five years, Dumfries Ice Bowl will host the Women’s Division II Group A tournament as six teams battle it out for promotion to Division I. The Dumfries venue has hosted seven World Championships in total in the past seven years.
Great Britain Women are joined by Australia, DPR Korea, Mexico, Slovenia and Spain for the IIHF showpiece tournament that gets under way tomorrow.
Councillor Adam Wilson, the Council’s events champion said;
"I’m proud that Dumfries and Galloway has been chosen to host a seventh ice hockey World Championship in just six years at the Ice Bowl. The competing nations have came from all over the world to take part in this tournament and I’m sure local people will provide a warm welcome to our guests and amazing support for the Great Britain team. If you get the opportunity come along to the Ice Bowl to take in the action and give ice hockey a go, it won’t disappoint."
Ice Hockey UK general secretary, Andy French, said;
"We have a fantastic working relationship with Dumfries Council and we are excited to be back here. The Ice Bowl is a top-class venue and the IIHF are always very complimentary about the tournaments held here. The staff involved in running the tournament and working at the ice rink are fantastic. We are looking forward to showcasing the tournament to the world."
The action gets underway at 1pm tomorrow (2 April) at Dumfries Ice Bowl, King Street, Dumfries.
