Do you have a Grand design?
Tuesday, 26 March 2019 16:41

The Dumfries and Galloway Council Design Awards aim to recognise, promote and celebrate examples of exceptional design quality within both the urban and rural parts of our region.

Following our very successful inaugural Design Awards in 2016 we are now inviting entries for the 2019  competition .

Entries in 2016 were diverse and included everything from residential eco-friendly houses to The Theatre Royal in Dumfries; from supported accommodation for vulnerable adults to holiday-let tree houses for families in Kirkpatrick Durham; self-builds to the visitor centre in Galloway Forest Park.

In the 2019 awards there are 4 categories:

  • New Residential Buildings (single or group buildings with public access or a place of employment)
  • New Non-Residential Buildings (single or groups with public access or a place of employment)
  • Adaptation, Extension and/or restoration of Existing Buildings for Residential Use (remaining or becoming residential, including holiday lets)
  • Adaptation, Extension and/or restoration of Existing Buildings for Non-Residential Use (remaining or becoming buildings with public access or a place of employment)

There will be a winner and a commendation in each of the 4 categories.

To be eligible, projects must be within Dumfries and Galloway and have been completed between 1st March 2016 and 31st March 2019.

The judges, which will be made up of people independent from the Council, will look at a range of design features, including: location and context of the project; use of environmental and sustainable design; how it has benefitted the economy or the community or included new ideas or technologies; and, the overall design and standard of work.

Entry is free, and applicants can be any of the individuals, organisations or collaborations involved in the project: architect or designer, owner, consultant, community group or original developer.
*Please make sure you have the permission of the current owner.

Applications forms can be found on the Council’s website once the competition is open:   http://www.dumgal.gov.uk/designawards

or by emailing: LDP@dumgal.gov.uk

The competition opens on 28th March and the closing date for completed entries is 15th May 2019.
