Visitors to Newbie can make the most of a clean beach
Friday, 09 August 2013 08:33
Visitors to Newbie, Annan can enjoy a nice clean stretch of beach thanks to people who take part in activities at Annan Activity and Resource Centre (ARC).  The ARC hosts day services for adults with learning disabilities.

Community Participation Officer from the ARC, Liz Halliday, worked with Nic Coombey, the coastal ranger looking after the 'Making Most of the Coast' project to kick off this activity.  Starting 7 months ago, Nic co-ordinated the work of the group of volunteers from the ARC.

Liz said, "The group has been out in all weathers and has received a great deal of satisfaction from the activity. Nic is now looking at other beach areas where we can start another clean up, but we will continue to monitor Newbie beach and pathway and maintain the standards reached."

Nic Coombey said, "Up to date we have collected over 1,260kg of marine litter which has obviously made a big difference to the appearance of the beach and also to Marine Life."

Chair of Social Work Committee, Councillor Andy Ferguson said, "Our Activity and Resource Centres are increasingly looking for ways that the activities they organise link with and benefit the communities where they are based.   People who use the ARC have their own ideas about activities that they would enjoy, that would extend their skills and that are meaningful.  I am impressed with this project and the hard work of the volunteers.   I look forward to seeing more such exciting and interesting ideas developing in partnership with other groups and community organisations."
