Region's commitment to renewable energy recognised
Thursday, 01 August 2013 10:13
Our region has been included in the Renewable Energy Sources (RES) Champion League Table for the first time. This is recognition of Dumfries and Galloway's commitment to using renewable forms of energy.
Dumfries and Galloway has been put forward as the Scottish National representative, in the 20,000-100,000 population division.
Selected through a quantitative and qualitative process the region will compete with finalists from other EU countries, with the potential of picking up an internationally recognised award. This year marks the first appearance of Scottish regions at the finals alongside other new entrants such as those from Austria, Belgium and Slovenia, but competition will be stiff with League veterans Germany, France and Bulgaria and the likes. The successful regions will receive their honours in Kassel, Germany at the RES Congress.
The inclusion of Dumfries and Galloway in the league table builds on work that has been taken forward by local communities supported by Dumfries and Galloway Council and Community Energy Scotland under the 100% RES project. 10 local communities from Wanlockhead to Whithorn are developing Sustainable Energy Action Plans in a bid to reduce their reliance of fossil fuel and to help tackle fuel poverty. Dumfries and Galloway in the only local authority in the UK involved in the 100% RES project and is twinned with Hungary.
Project Champion, Councillor Ian Carruthers said
“To progress through to the finals of the 100RES Championships is great for the people of Dumfries and Galloway. It is the perfect platform for the region to highlight our commitment to the 100% Renewable Energy Source project and how this can directly tackle fuel poverty and sustainability within local communities”
