Young Recruits Programme helps young people into work
Thursday, 01 August 2013 08:29
Dumfries and Galloway Council is committed to tackling youth unemployment and has worked with partners to secure £192,000 of European Social Fund and Scottish Government funding to help us deliver new jobs for our young people. This initiative will give an advantage to our region’s young people who traditionally find it harder to get a job in times of economic challenges. This initiative will benefit the young people of our region by securing jobs and will help our local businesses and communities build a stronger more sustainable local economy.
The programme called “The Young Recruits Programme” is a region wide employer recruitment incentive funded through Youth Employment Scotland Funding. The Launch of the first placements on the scheme will take place on 31st July 2013 at Jacquie’s Beauty on the Whitesands.
Local business woman Jacquie Brown said, “I am delighted to be involved with the Young Recruits Programme. This programme has allowed me to recruit young people to develop their skills and experience under my guidance and support. It is also a way of ensuring that the salon and the Dumfries area continues to be recognised as the centre of excellence in the Beauty Industry and has helped 3 young graduates get back on their chosen career path.”
Newly appointed trainee therapist, Iona McMinn, said, “Having just qualified I was unsure what my next step would be as the job opportunities are not really out there. Securing this role not only fulfils my ambition working as graduate trainee in an award winning salon, but allows me to work in a role that involves caring for clients, something that I’m passionate about. Jacquie’s has the same ethos.“
Dumfries and Galloway Council Chief Executive, Gavin Stevenson, said, "On behalf of our Council and employability partners, I am delighted to be able to receive this Youth Employment Scotland funding. Together we already do a lot to address the scourge of youth unemployment.
"This additional funding from the European Social Fund and the Scottish Government will make a real difference for at least 100 of our young people giving them the start in life that we would all wish for our own children. The funding received for this new “Young Recruits Programme” will encourage our region’s employers to develop their business by providing a wage subsidy if they recruit one of our local young talented workforce. Not only will this initiative give local young people the chance to channel their enthusiasm and energy into sustainable and rewarding employment, it will also support the future economic success of our region’s economy.
"Our Council has been working hard with local partners to highlight the wide range of employability activity with a particular focus on simplifying how employers can access information. Our region’s new Employment Total Access Point (TAP) has been developed to make it easier for employers to access the range of training and employment resources that are available through a single point of contact. The service will engage with local employers across the region making them aware of all the new and existing resources that are available to support their business.
"The aim of the programme is to create 100 job opportunities for young people across the region through small and micro sized businesses. Support will reach employers at local level via a total access point for employers – the D&G Employment TAP is well placed to ensure that employers are aware of existing and new resources which can help local businesses. Through the Young Recruits programme, financial support (50% at National Minimum Wage) will be provided for 6 months for businesses that employ a 16-24 year olds who meet the essential criteria. "
