Viewpoint Voices

Local groups gathered at the Mill on the Fleet in Gatehouse recently to celebrate a project where they visited and then wrote about the fantastic views from the National Scenic Areas. Members of the Dumfries and Stewartry branches of The University of the 3rd Age, senior pupils from schools across the region, and a group of local residents visited six viewpoints in the Fleet Valley, the East Stewartry Coast and the Nith Estuary NSAs.
Working with award winning poet Jean Atkin, the groups produced short poems inspired by their visits. Some of those who took part were experienced creative writers and others had never written a poem before. Participants then recorded the poems and their voices can now be heard in a series of short films, available at www.dumgal.gov.uk/nsa. Selections of the poems created have now been published in a series of leaflets which are available from local outlets.
One of the participants commented ‘I thoroughly enjoyed it. A fabulous day out exploring a hitherto little known local viewpoint, but with a goal: to write.’
9 pupils from Castle Douglas High School joined the celebrations at the Mill on the Fleet as well. They had visited Knockbrex Hill Viewpoint on the Carrick shore earlier in the day and shared their newly written poems with the other groups.
Councillor Ian Carruthers, Chair of PHES Committee, said ‘The National Scenic Areas are some of the finest landscapes in Scotland and are one of our prized natural assets in Dumfries and Galloway. I’m delighted that they have been inspiring local groups and their inspiration is being used to promote the region to others.’
The Viewpoints Voices project was jointly funded by Creative Scotland’s Live Literature programme, which is managed by Scottish Book Trust, and Dumfries and Galloway Council.
Drumburn L-R U3A Poetry Lovers Anne Broatch, Maria Mosby, Linda Sharratt, Ruth Thomson, Betty Tindal, and Viewpoint owner John McMyn. Knocktinkle L-R David Mark Williams, Jeremy Carlisle, Alison Steel, David Steel, Anna Johnson, Jean Atkin
