John Paul Jones Birthplace Museum marks 60th anniversary of plaque unveiling
Wednesday, 03 July 2013 14:04
John Paul Jones, known in the USA as ‘the father of the American Navy’ and in Britain as a notorious pirate, was born on 6th July 1747 and on 6th July 1953 a commemorative plaque was placed on the cottage at Arbigland, Kirkbean where he was born. This cottage is now the John Paul Jones Birthplace Museum.
On 6 and 7 July 2013 the museum is marking the 60th anniversary of the plaque unveiling with two days of Independence Day and Pirate Birthday Party celebrations.
The special pirate birthday weekend will see all the usual attractions at the museum plus re-enactors in period costume and live demonstrations of antique firearms. There will be tales of Jones’ famous victory at the Battle of Flamborough Head and treasure hunts.
Wigtown Amateur Radio Club will be linking with radio operators around the world, targeting the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, USA.
Entry for children and pirates in costume is free of charge.
The celebrations take place between 11am and 5pm on Saturday July 6th and Sunday July 7th 2013 at the John Paul Jones Birthplace Museum, Arbigland, Kirkbean.
