Olympic Storytelling Competition launched
Thursday, 28 February 2013 16:27
The greatest show on earth deserves the greatest storytellers and Dumfries & Galloway Council is searching for the best Olympic Storytellers in the region.

The competition has been launched in Annandale & Eskdale and schools have been asked to work with children in Primaries 3 – Primary 7 to capture the spirit and excitement that surrounds London 2012 and enable us to bring the magic of the Olympic Games to people in Dumfries & Galloway.

Storytelling is the conveying of events in words or images, often by creativeness or imagination. Stories or narratives have been shared in every culture as a means of entertainment, education, cultural preservation and in order to instil moral values.

Winners will be chosen for each area in the region and in Annandale & Eskdale shortlisted entries will be displayed for public viewing in Annan museum. Three winners in Annandale & Eskdale will receive vouchers for the Sports Academy with the overall winner also getting an invite with friends and family to the Sports Awards on March 30th. At the awards they will be presented with their prize by Team GB Olympic Handball Captain, Lynn McCafferty. Their school will also receive a visit by Scottish Swimmer, Andrew Mayor, who will talk about the benefits sport has had on his life and a reproduction of the winning article will appear in the local newspaper.

Chairman of Annandale & Eskdale Area Committee Ian Lindsay said “I’m looking forward to reading lots of imaginative and fun articles about what the Olympics and what staging them in London in 2012 means to our children, I’m hoping to see some truly original and personal insights”.

The competition, which is running region wide, will see the best article chosen as the winner for the region. The initiative has been highlighted by the Games Legacy for Scotland as a model of best practice and was highlighted on the Education Scotland Legacy for learning website.
