Transforming Neighbourhoods
Tuesday, 02 July 2013 14:48
At today's housing sub committee, councillors were given an update on the Dumfries Housing Regeneration Area (HRA) pilot project.
The project not only encourages the repair of individual properties but looks to improve the wider environment, develop housing and reduce crime in the areas of Queen Street, Brewery Street and Friars Vennel.
A recent survey concluded that more than 50% of residents and owners in Queen Street felt that the implementation of the pilot project has improved their street.
There will be more consultation with Queen Street residents by the charity SUSTRANS as they look to transform the street into a more resident friendly area. Proposals are being developed at present and a consultation event with residents is planned for this July.
In addition to this, a grant scheme has been launched to part fund facelifts to properties in the regeneration area. There is a similar offer for commercial properties.
Owners of empty properties are being encouraged to make their buildings habitable with the Council offering up to 50% of repair costs.
Councillor Jim McClung, Chair of the Council's Housing Sub Committee said:
"There is still a lot to do, but this is a really good start. The majority of tenants and landlords are engaging with the process and hopefully this will continue and we won't have to use enforcement powers."
