Election results

There are five types of elections you can vote in and we administer all of these for Dumfries and Galloway.

Local government (council) elections

We have 13 electoral wards in our region with either three or four councillors representing each area. Elections are held every 5 years using the Single Transferable Voting system to decide who is elected as a councillor.

The next local government elections take place on Thursday 4 May 2017.

Scottish Parliament elections

The Scottish Parliament is comprised of 129 Members of the Scottish Parliament (MSPs). Elections to the Scottish Parliament are every 4 years and use the Additional Member System.

When you vote in a Scottish Parliament election, you have two votes - one to elect your constituency member and one to elect your regional member.

The next Scottish Parliament elections will take place in 2021.

UK Parliament elections (General Elections)

Elections for the UK Parliament are held every 5 years. Registered voters in 650 constituencies of the UK vote for a Member of Parliament (MP) to represent them in the House of Commons.

European Parliament elections

The European Parliament is the only directly-elected body of the European Union. There are 751 Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) from 28 Member States. MEPs are elected every five years, using proportional representation.

There are 73 UK MEPs and there are 6 Members elected to serve Scotland.

The next European Parliament elections will be in 2019.

Community councils

Community councils are not part of local government but play an important role in representing the views of their community to us and other public bodies. Elections are held every 4 years. There are 107 community council areas in Dumfries and Galloway, and usually around 90 community councils are operational at any time.
