Commercial vehicle brake testing

We carry out brake testing on all types of heavy good vehicles (HGVs) in our Dumfries and Stranraer workshops.

You should check brake performance as part of your maintenance procedures. It is beneficial to test brakes as part of the vehicle's preparation for an annual test.

We offer DVSA voluntary brake testing for a wide range of vehicles at competitive rates. Our specialist testers are fully-trained to inspect all vehicles to the highest standards and we have the latest diagnostic equipment.

We are open from 7.30am until 7.30pm, Monday to Friday.

When confirming a booking we will ask you for:

  • the name of your company
  • your name and contact details
  • vehicle registration
  • number of axles
  • if it is loaded
  • is it hazardous goods

Cost and payment

The price of the brake test is £12 per axle.

You can pay by cash or cheque.

Preparing your vehicle

You need to add an appropriate load where possible whenever the vehicle is brake tested. You will get a more accurate brake performance result, based on the vehicle being laden in use.

You'll need to bring your VTG6 HGV plating and testing documents for the vehicle.

The test should take around 20 minutes.

Repairs and retests

Your vehicle must be repaired and retested if it fails the test.

Almost all repairs required to pass the test can be done on site. We'll tell you upfront about any work that's needed and what the charges will be.

We might be able to do repairs on the same day depending on the work required and our workload, we can book you another appointment if needed.

You will need a full retest which will cost £12 per axle.
