Whitesands project - impact on water levels elsewhere

Our flood protection scheme at Whitesands aims to ensure other areas are not at increased flood risk.

From the outset, one of the main conditions of the scheme has been that any flood protection must not displace the problem of flooding to the other side of the River Nith at Whitesands or to anywhere else along the river.

During the design stages it was found that the expected water levels once the defences are in place differed very little from the current water levels. This is a consequence of a slight increase in velocities, allowing more water to pass downstream during a flood.

The detailed findings showed the only location of increased water levels was upstream of the Buccleuch Street Bridge. This will be addressed by the removal of material build up under Devorgilla Bridge's east arch.
