Underwater photography exhibition by Jim McMichael
Thursday, 29 November 2012 19:41
A new Gracefield Arts Centre Café Gallery exhibition opened on 14 February. The exhibition features brightly coloured photographs of exotic sea creatures by local photographer Jim McMichael.

Jim lives in Auldgirth in Dumfries and Galloway. An enthusiastic member of the Dumfries Camera Club, he travels far and wide to scuba dive and to capture images of some of the world’s most interesting and elusive creatures. This exhibition includes photographs of exotic angel fish, beautiful sea anemones and menacing moray eels. These photographs have been taken in the Red Sea, in the Mediterranean and also in the seas off Thailand, Mexico and Cuba. Jim also dives off the British coast and says that the colours he sees there are no less exotic.

Talking about his passion for his photography Jim says, “As a scuba diver, I always wanted to capture the magic of the undersea world on camera. Until recently the equipment was far too cumbersome, but now with digital cameras, this world is my oyster! I cannot talk only about the myriad of colours picked up in my torchlight, but also capture these for others to see. A camera in a waterproof housing, a good dive torch, and the darting fish to settle just for a moment is what every underwater photographer dreams of and occasionally dreams come true.”

Jim’s exhibition of photographs can be seen at Gracefield Arts Centre, 28 Edinburgh Road, Dumfries, Tuesday to Saturday 10am to 5pm until 17 March.
