Dumfries & Galloway Housing Needs & Demand Survey
Dumfries & Galloway Council is carrying out research on the housing needs and aspirations of local households. The research will help the Council to plan the number of new homes needed in the area over the next 20 years, as well as housing services that help people to live independently and well in the communities they choose.
Why are we consulting?
The consultation will inform the new Dumfries & Galloway Housing Needs & Demand Assessment study. The study provides evidence that will be used to develop the new Local Housing Strategy and the Council's land use strategy within the next Local Development Plan. The study will estimate the number of new homes needed in Dumfries & Galloway over the next 20 years and assess the housing needs of specific groups including new households who want to form, households with a health condition or disability who need specialist housing and key workers.
The Housing Need & Demand Assessment Study is the main evidence base used to guide the delivery of new homes in Dumfries & Galloway. The Housing Need & Demand Assessment Survey will ensure that the voice of local residents is at the centre of future housing planning.
To make sure that the results are accurate, the Council want to speak to residents across Dumfries and Galloway, of all ages and living in all types of housing.
An online survey is open to all Dumfries and Galloway residents and 500 telephone interviews will be carried out with households across the area. The survey is being carried out by a professional market research company, Research Resource.
All survey responses will be for research purposes only and it will not be possible to identify individual households from the responses. Research Resource are registered under the Data Protection Act and all responses will be completely confidential.

What we will do?
The Housing Need & Demand Assessment Survey will help to inform a calculation on the number of new homes needed in Dumfries & Galloway. This calculation will be broken down by sub-area and housing tenure.
The Housing Need & Demand Assessment calculation will be used to set Housing Supply Targets in the new Local Housing Strategy. These targets set out the number of new homes which should be delivered each year over the next 5 years. This includes affordable homes and homes delivered by private developers.
The Housing Supply Target will also be used to guide land use in the next Local Development Plan, ensuring that a generous supply of land is identified to support housing delivery.
The Housing Need & Demand Assessment will be approved by the Scottish Government and made available on the Council's website.
