Wigtownshire is ready for winter
Monday, 22 July 2013 13:56
For the past two years, Wigtownshire’s community councils and community groups have been very interested in the concept of community resilience. Steven Wylie, Community Resilience Adviser based within the Safety and Resilience Team, has carried out a number of training nights which were very well received by those who attended.
The training nights included information on emergency planning, emergencies that happen within Dumfries and Galloway, the risks that communities face and what communities can do to help themselves. The training nights also included mini-exercises which stimulated thinking and ideas by all those who attended.
Councillor Roberta Tuckfield said, "As Area Chair I am extremely pleased that communities in Wigtownshire have completed these resilience plans and are preparing to be able to cope with any emergencies in their area. I think the work they have undertaken was evident from the fantastic community response we observed during the severe weather in March this year. I think it is important that our Council continues to support communities to support themselves.”
Community councils were working on their community resilience plans before the very heavy snow which fell in March of this year. When the call came, communities kicked into gear and used their plans to great effect. Communities themselves told us how useful the training and the plans had been in their response.
Lesley Cerexhe, Chair of Portpatrick Community Council, said, "As one of the first community councils to complete our Plans, we value the excellent support and guidance which the Community Resilience Adviser has provided. This has allowed us to effectively plan for any future emergencies which may arise and to motivate our volunteers to support their communities whenever they are needed.”
Following the severe weather, the Safety and Resilience Team along with Wendy Jesson from the Wigtownshire Area Framework Team, organised a 'cold debrief' for all Wigtownshire community councils and groups. This was innovative in terms of asking what communities felt about the agencies’ response to the emergency and in asking them to comment on how the agencies performed. This was a great success, with positive learning points being highlighted by the groups and progressed by the Team.
Alongside all of this, communities were still completing their plans. Wendy Jesson assisted with and promoted the plans. Wendy visited many community councils within Wigtownshire and offered one to one assistance and advice in their completion.
As of 18 July 2013, Wigtownshire community councils have completed 100% of their community resilience plans. Sixteen community councils in all submitted their plans.
It doesn’t stop there though because Wendy is encouraging other non-affiliated community groups within the area to complete their plans.
