Council Commits to £12.6 Million to Delivering Broadband
Tuesday, 21 May 2013 16:44
At Policy and Resources committee this morning (21 May 2013) Councillors committed to a £12.6M investment to take forward superfast Broadband for households and businesses across the region.

The government funded national programme hopes to deliver superfast Broadband to 75% of premises in each local authority area. Today, Dumfries and Galloway Council committed to increasing this target by investing £12.6M. This injection will aim to increase the target to 85% of premises in the region.

The South of Scotland Broadband Plan recognises how important this investment is by putting infrastructure in place to ensure that superfast Broadband can be delivered to those areas that do not currently receive it. Furthermore, the national programme – The Step Change project – will deliver a significant uplift in speeds by 2015.

Chair of Policy and Resources committee, Cllr Ivor Hyslop, said “Supporting and stimulating our local economy is one of our Council’s Priorities. Our investment in the rollout of superfast Broadband to 85% of our region illustrates our commitment to assisting homes and businesses across Dumfries and Galloway. Our Council remains committed to working with those communities in the final 15% to ensure that they are not left disadvantaged in this first phase of the project.”
