Domestic Abuse and Violence Against Women Partnership (DAVAWP) Community Survey prize draw winner
Tuesday, 14 May 2013 14:39
Suzanne Wishart was the lucky winner of the £100 cash draw which closed the DAVAWP 2012-13 Community Survey at the end of March. The draw was done using a random number selector.

The consultation gathered the views of nearly 400 people. The aim of the consultation, was to see what the views of the Dumfries and Galloway residents are on Domestic Abuse and other forms of violence that mainly affect women and children.  The DAVAWP will be able to see how these views have changed in relation to previous surveys.

The results highlighted positive improvements in people’s understanding of the following:
• The impact of domestic abuse on children
• The far reaching nature of domestic abuse
• Recognition of the fact that people suffering domestic abuse face barriers
• Awareness of some aspects of emotional abuse
• Awareness of avenues for third-party reporting like the Police and Crime Stoppers
• The influence of the media on young women’s image

The results also highlighted the need to continue raising awareness of the following:
• The impact of alcohol and drugs on someone’s ability to consent to sexual activity
• Alcohol is not the cause for domestic abuse to happen despite that it features in domestic abuse situations and can be a trigger
• The negative effects of pornography consumption on sexual attitudes and sexual behaviour
• The connections between poverty and lack of opportunities as an influencing factor for those involved in prostitution

Respondents had also the opportunity to let the DAVAWP know their suggestions and views on other issues; these were of great interest to the Partnership.

The results will be of enormous use to inform future awareness raising and other work to tackle domestic abuse and other forms of violence in Dumfries and Galloway.

Hazel Borland, NHS D&G Director of Nursing and DAVAWP Chair, said: “It’s a pleasure to present Suzanne with this prize and also I would like to thank everyone who took part in this survey; it is very important for us to know what people in the region think about these issues so that the DAVAWP’s actions are meaningful and effective.”
