More pupils eligible for free school meals
Thursday, 02 May 2013 15:07
Parents or pupils who receive Child Tax Credit (CTC) and have an annual income under £15,910 are eligible for free school meals. This is a rise from the previous threshold of £15,860, meaning that more pupils in Dumfries and Galloway will be eligible for free school meals.
Councillor Patsy Gilroy, chairman of the DGFirst Management Committee, said, “It’s a priority of our Council that we provide a good start in life for all our children and we’re committed to a programme of early intervention targeted at our region’s most vulnerable children. I’m particularly keen that a higher proportion of children eligible for free meals take up the option, ensuring that more vulnerable children benefit from a healthy and nutritious meal each day.”
From 6 April 2013, pupils will be eligible for free school meals if their parents or carers receive one of the following:
• Income Support
• Income-based Job Seeker’s Allowance
• Any income related element of Employment and Support Allowance
• Child Tax Credit (but not Working Tax Credit) with an income under £15,910
• Both maximum Child Tax Credit and maximum Working Tax Credit with an income under £6,420
• Support under Part 6 of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
Pupils who receive any of the above benefits in their own right can also claim free school meals.
Dumfries and Galloway Council currently offers a free school meal to all primary 1 pupils in the region.
