Washed Away Exhibition Open At Annan Museum
Tuesday, 11 October 2022 10:03

A new exhibition is now open in Annan Museum.  ‘Washed Away: Commemorating Annan’s bridges and other things lost’ will run until late October.  It includes contributions from Annan Art Club, Annan Camera Club and Solway Video and has been supported by Annan The History Town and Annan A Tale of Two Bridges Community Group.

Communities Committee Chairman, Councillor Archie Dryburgh said:

“We are delighted that so many members of the public also contributed their photographs and memories to this exhibition. Some wonderful photographs have come to light of the bridges and we are sure our visitors will find them interesting.”

The exhibition features historic and modern artworks, photographs old and new, museum objects and parts of The Jubilee and Cuthbertson Memorial Bridges.

Councillor John Campbell, who sits as Vice Chair on the Communities Committee commented:

“These historic bridges were sadly lost in 2021 and this is the first time that they have been on public display since then. As well as making a striking museum display, we are glad that the war memorial plaque from the Cuthbertson Bridge is now available for visitors to view as a way of remembering the loss of life in World War Two.”

The exhibition’s main focus is on the historic bridges but also on the links between Annan the town, the river and the Solway.  It includes an exploration of ‘other things lost’ such as parts of Annan Castle’s motte which was damaged by flood in the 1100s and the Solway Viaduct which was damaged by ice in 1881.

Annan Museum and the Washed Away exhibition is open Tuesday to Saturday.  It is free to enter.  The last day to view the exhibition will be Saturday 29 October.
