Busy Time At Gracefield
Tuesday, 11 October 2022 09:29

New exhibition for Autumns begin on the 8th October with two Dumfries and Galloway based artists:  in Gallery 1 Katie Anderson presents Settling: a reflective exhibition bringing together a series of sculptural sound and installation works, many exhibited in a gallery space for the first time. Featuring a pair of environmental sound works re-imagined for the gallery, alongside new audio works and installations exploring place, identity, and environment – the works in Settling invite the audience to take a journey – from the sonic to the imagined.  Alongside the exhibition join us for some free related events:

The Call: Gallery and Grounds Wandering

Saturday 15 October 2pm to 4pm

The Call is on the move: take a stroll around Gracefield’s grounds as the artist and a collaborator walk the work around the site. Take part in listening to the work and wider environment using the sculptural listening cones as they playfully explore the site.

Barrow Tarot Readings

Saturday 5 November 2pm to 4pm

Join the artist in a one-to-one conversation to explore possible futures using the Barrow Tarot card decks. Sessions approx. 10 minutes each.

Over in Gallery 2 from 15 October, Silvy Weatherall exhibits a selection of past and new work with her solo show, Broken Journeys. Silvy works with multi-media, her work is defined by the material she uses. A hater of waste, she works with objects that have become obsolete and worthless, whether it is smashed china or other broken things destined for landfill. The show includes her ‘Last Supper’ a sculptural work of 12 heads which has featured in a display at St Marys Catherdral in Edinburgh for the International Arts Festival.  Silvy has shown her work widely across the UK and been a regular participant in the Spring Fling Open studios annual event at her base in Irongray.  Silvy will be in the gallery on Saturday 15th October to chat to visitors.

Communities Committee Chairman, Councillor Archie Dryburgh said:

“These new exhibitions offer something very original and inspirational using unfamiliar media in an exciting and engaging way. Both ‘must see’ show that demonstrate the strength and quality of contemporary art practise in our region”

Also on display in the Café Gallery is the annual exhibition of the work of the Nithsdale Artists group – 7 local artist who meet at Gracefield to learn and practise their techniques in a social space.

Councillor John Campbell, who is Vice Chair of Communities Committee added:

“Gracefield continues to showcase a wide range of art and craft that never fails to get you thinking and inspiring creativity, from the very early beginner to the serious and seasoned professional.”

The exhibitions are open Tuesday-Saturday 10am to 5pm, admission free, at 28 Edinburgh Road Dumfries. The programme of artist-led adult weekend workshop continues with textile art, ring making and printmaking (starting from £40 per day). For younger visitors, the Gracefield kids’ clubs are £5.50 per child or £8 when you book 2 kids together, so bring a friend and enjoy a 2 hour session on a Saturdays during termtime and Wednesday morning during school holidays.
