Activities and Volunteers the focus in Youth work report
Thursday, 05 November 2020 12:44

The Council’s Communities Committee meets on Tuesday 10 November and will receive an update on the Youth Work Service Quality and Standards Annual Report for 2019/20.

Members will be aske to scrutinise and agree the findings of the report, that details the key work carried out by our Council’s Youth Work Team in each of the priority areas;

  • Community based youth work opportunities

  • Youth work in schools

  • Youth participation and democracy

  • Wider achievement, including the Duke of Edinburgh award

  • Support to Third Sector

Key activities and achievements are also defined in the report, including how a joint meeting of Dumfries and Galloway Council’s Full Council and the Youth Council was held, how over £860,000 of external funding was sourced and secured and how over 45,000 young people took part in youth events.  These fantastic participation figures are mirrored by the fact that nearly 600 volunteers were involved in the youth work service.

The report also mentions the impact of Covid-19 on services and how the next year is a critical one in ensuring as many activities and opportunities are offered to our young people in safe and controlled ways.

Communities Committee Chairman, Councillor Andy Ferguson commented;

“It is no secret that we have a fantastic Youth Work service here in Dumfries and Galloway, and the figures that are highlighted in this report really does show this.  Given the year we’ve all had, I echo the theme of the report in supporting the service through what will be a vital year ahead for our young people.”

Councillor John Martin, who sits as Vice-Chairman said;

“On looking through the report, the two stats that jump out at me are the number of young people taking part in activities and the number of volunteers we have that allow for these activities to take place. I would like to offer my sincere thanks to our volunteers for their sterling efforts.”
