Jigs and reels in Stewartry for Day of Dance
Monday, 03 February 2020 14:40
Children from primary schools across the Stewartry travelled to Dalbeattie Learning Campus to take part in the annual Day of Dance event, showcasing all the Scottish Country Dance routines they learned over the previous term.
Teams from Dalbeattie, Castle Douglas, Gelston and Crossmichael, Hardgate, Springholm, Borgue and Auchencairn Primarys took part, with the pupil numbers totalling over 190 children.
The Dances were taught by Active Schools staff, school staff and some volunteers all using the Jigs and Reels resource created by the Scottish Schools Group – a branch of The Royal Scottish Country Dancing Society [RSCDS].
9 dances were performedby pupils, compered by Jane Riddet, a member of the Scottish Schools Group for RSCDS and member of the Active Schools and Community Sport coaching team. Not only did Jane coordinate almost 200 pupils through 9 performances, she also managed to get all staff to participate in a Virgina Reel.
The event was supported by Dalbeattie High school Sports Leaders, one of whom, Shannon McMinn, piped all pupils around the hall for the opening ceremony.
The event was also supported by David Foreman and Sheila Crosthwaite of the RSCDS Castle Douglas Branch, who are keen to deveelop of the Scottish country dancing in schools and the community.
David Foreman said: “The pupils' enthusiasm for the dances was just tremendous. What hit you was the sheer volume of people in the room, all dancing together with smiles on their faces. It was so encouraging to see”.
Jane Riddet said: “ Seeing so many schools using the Jigs and Reels resource to learn these dances wasfabulous. Our aim is to see all schools with this resource, teaching these traditional dances to all young children. Long may all that enthusiasm last.I'm already looking forward to next year.”
Councilor JEff Leaver, chair of the Education and Learning committee, said: “This energetic event showcases the real enthusiasm and skill our pupils have for Scottish country dancing. It allows schools and pupils the opportunity to come together and perform inclusively. To increase numbers performing to almost 200 in two years highlights the appetite and enthusiasm for Scottish country dancing.”
Councillor Ros Surtees, vice chair, said: This is such an enjoyable event with large numbers of children taking part. Thank you to the local RSCDS Branch, staff and sports leaders from local secondary schools for helping make it possible and to Dalbeattie Learning campus for hosting the event.”
